Steps in learning to play the oboe...
Author: Ashley91489

I'm working with a student now and after one lesson, she could play from C (on the staff) down to low C. For the first lesson, I was very happy. Tone wasn't so great and it did sound a bit duck like but that happens with just about every beginner until they learn to control.

What suggestions should I give at this point and what should I really work on? She's been practicing so I'm hoping soon we can work on some actual music with these notes. What is the best way to describe how to get a decent tone and overcome that duck like quality?

Any other advice for this early on?

(BTW, she is a 9th grade clarinet (been playing 2 years) switching over to oboe. Right now, she's playing on a store bought Lesher reed. I thought I would suggest some good handmade reeds later but for now, something easy to play on would be ideal.)
