Author: EaubeauHorn  Date:   2008-04-19 17:21 When I took up the oboe last summer, a couple of very good friends told me that I didn't want to do that. Both of them horn players, and myself a horn player. Both of them being married to oboe players....and hence having intimate contact with the mind of an oboe player. I think they were afraid I'd become someone else! But while reed-making, in particular, is an amazingly fussy pursuit, the oboe itself is not driving me to drink, yet. Once I got past the phase of nearly passing out from the breath-hold means of playing it, I felt more mentally stable. Quite different from the type of passing out I got when I started playing the tuba, which comes from too much air flow instead of too little. Maybe next year I'll take up the contrabass kazoo. EBH
