If the back pressure from holding your breath caused people to have mental problems, then deep-sea pearl divers would also have reputations as "all being crazy". And I've never heard that.
I think there's a basic mindset that goes with choosing the oboe in the first place. You definitely have to be persistent, even stubborn, and you tend to be solitary, because oboe music tends not to be written with large "clumps" of musicians in mind, unlike clarinets and flutes, which seem to come in shoals in the average high school band. If you're a group animal, a "joiner", you won't like the oboe in junior high because "sectionals" is just you by your lonesome, and you'll probably switch to clarinet or flute, or sax.
