after soaking the cane, i hold it concave side facing out between my left thumb and index finger, vertically, facing my right. then with the index finger of my right hand, i press my fingernail as close to the middle of the cane visually as i cane (i suppose you could measure this with a caliper and draw a line, but i don't). then i push the cane in slowly trying to ensure i keep the halves even...the point of no return is the break point where the cane surface cracks...at that point, i turn the cane around so i can squeeze the fold shut in a straight line with my right hand while guiding the ends together with my left. hope that's clear! obviously i'm RH.
having learned to do it that way long ago, i bought an easel thinking this has to be more accurate, but i found that it's not and that scoring the cane surface creates a danger of the cane actually coming apart when you fold it! i still use it sometimes to taper the ends of the cane before tying, but even that's not really necessary.
