Soak in hot tap water. After 20 minutes, if the cane doesn't sink, surface tension is causing the cane to float. Touch each piece. It should sink. If you soak in cold water, it can take seemingly forever for the cane to sink. Also, if you bend cane over your index finger, slowly, rather than scoring it on an easel, there will be less tendency for the cane to split. The cane may stay a little open at the sides of the top, but on scraping the tip & cutting open immediately after tying, the blades should close at the top. The blades close even more on scraping the reed to completion. If they still stay splayed, pinch the wet reed down on a wet flat plaque for 10-12 seconds. Front & back is ok. See Kerry Willingham's website for a video on this procedure. It really works.
Best,
