General rule is if a crack is 2 inches or longer you're going to need a pin or so. That kind of crack often results from the wood shrinking around the metal tenon and not being able to handle the stress. The guy I use, Paul Woltz of Kennelly Keys in Lynnwood, Washington does an amazing job on cracks, and particularly does an excellent job with these kinds of cracks. Where as most repairmen just fill it, but leave the bore cracked, Paul actually pulls out the metal tenon, scrapes away a good amount of wood out of the socket, and puts the tenon back in. This encourages the crack to naturally close so that even the bore is no longer cracked and it looks immaculate.
I personally think there's harm in leaving a crack. If the weather remains cold, and you keep blowing hot air, the crack can spread, but since it's rooted to a post, you're probably safe.
