whew. Superb advice there from vboboe!
Specifically regarding counting: The most important time to count is as soon as you've stopped playing. That is, you've just come to the end of a beautiful phrase you have played wonderfully, faded away al niente - don't forget that the beginning of the next bar is "ONE".
Also, you should mark your parts with pencil, and indicate (say) that the flute comes in 3 bars before you - this rehearsal diligence has saved my skin on several occasions!
Listen to a recording of the work you are playing, following in your part. This will familiarize you with how your entrances should sound (assuming the clarinet comes in on cue, of course).
But very soon you will reach a point where counting becomes second nature. honestly!
