Ain't it FUN!!!
The local community orchestra is what gave me the idea of attempting to play oboe again. They have no oboes at all. Some of the flutes have been doing the oboe parts so far. When the conductor found out I use to play oboe many moons ago he encouraged me to give it a try again. I'm loving it and it gives me a set goal- to be able to play oboe with the orchestra. I must admit that tympani (which I currently play)is fun- It seems that percussionists are hard to find in these parts too- I've had another community orchestra try to recruit me for their group-but no- I am determined that eventually I will be on oboe so my spare time goes to practice toward that goal.
It sounds like you are lucky to have a person playing oboe with you in that orchestra that is considerate. That is a big, big plus. My experience in playing in a pipe band, and other musical groups has been that there are those who's egos get in the way of "making music" all to often. When that happens the music suffers.
I'd second the opinion that your conductor may have been preoccupied and may loosen up later, especially if it was the first practice. They have a lot to deal with.
