Andrew,
I had exactly the same experience with the conductor of our wind band in Italy. However months later I realised that whereas we each go armed with our instruments determined to enjoy ourselves, he has far more on his mind - the scores, organisation, future concerts etc. He's also seen lots of people come and go, and I think he was putting off the 'friendly' bit till he was sure that I was a 'regular'.
We don't have an oboist now, but we had a really good one who turned up occasionally for about 6 months, played a few concerts, then suddenly stopped coming.
So your conductor is probably waiting to see if you come back. Once he sees he can count on you, I think he'll change completely.
