 Clarinet, viola and cello
Author: Ed Lowry
Date:   2016-05-26 08:18

I'm looking for an eight to ten minute piece or movement to play in chamber music group for a trio consisting of clarinet, viola and cello. IMSLP has about six pieces -- I didn't see any on Oliver Seeley's web page. I've ordered Three Dark Paintings from Gary Van Cott's list.

Does anyone else have a suggestion? And if there's something in the violin, viola cello category that you've performed that works well, I'd be interested in that too.

Thanks.

Some of the Corelli trio sonatas work very well with a clarinet (either C clarinet, or tranposed B flat) on the violin part....
There are some Haydn pieces- I played these many years ago and recall NOT being very excited by them... but they ARE authentic, not arrangements.

There's a very nice trio by Karel Husa- Evocations of Slovakia:

This viola's inclusion's a deal breaker?

read "cello" where you see "bassoon."

just did this one...

Try the Herold Serenade. It's a nice little piece.

I also did a piece by Bertold Hummel called Capriccio. It's originally for violin, viola and cello, but I transposed the violin part for clarinet. It worked quite nicely.
I found it here: http://www.bertoldhummel.de/werkbeschreibungen/opus_14.html and http://www.boosey.com/pages/Opera/catalogue/musicfinder_detail.asp?site-lang=en&musicdetailsid=20045

Aside from the trios for cl/vla/vcl on IMSLP, from the Classical period there are also:
Fuchs, Johann Nepomuk (1766 - 1839) Trio in D major (1808) (cl in A)
Gébauer, Michel-Joseph, 3 trios op. 4
Hummel, JN, Serenade Op. 63 in G
Kreutzer, Rodolphe (1766 - 1831) Trio in F major (Bb cl or C cl/ob)
Polzelli, Antonio (1783 - 1855) Trio Op. 4 (1810)

I have played the Polzelli and the Fuchs. The Fuchs is quite good and the Polzelli is very good. Polzelli is thought to be the son FJ Haydn had with his mistress, the singer Luiga Polzelli. Growing up, Antonio was apparently called Anton because of his Austrian father.

The Haydn trios referred to in an earlier post are for cl/vln/vcl.

Thanks Simon- sorry I'd got the Haydn trio instrumentation wrong (I bought the music and performed it in 2003, not even thought of it since). Even though I'm not the OP, I'd be keen to try the Fuchs, the Hummel and Kreutzer works look interesting too... and I do recall playing a Gebauer work some time ago that was quite well written- that might be a good find!
