The reason a 'standard' ligature doesn't work (typical metal band that is as wide as the "lines of ligature" all around) is because you have to make the decision when fabricating at what angle the ends will come together (even with two screw which help compensate for angle differences there is a practical limit) and what the average minimum and maximum clamping size needs to be (ever take a basic metal ligature and smooth it out to see what that looks like?). The reason the Opitmum does NOT work, is because it is a thick metal band all around despite being a single screw design.

On a Masters I've successfully used ALL Rovners, ALL BGs, the Floating Rail Ligature, and any of the 'string' types as well, Vandoren Klassik, Ventos Bambu......etc.

The M/O ligature design is clever, because it is a single screw inverted design where the 'frame' comes to a single point at the screw....it self adjusts to whatever the shape of the mouthpiece is. It still needs to be an 'average' size however (Bb mouthpiece version) won't fit an alto clarinet mouthpiece or an Otto Link style saxophone mouthpiece.
