 Woodwind Co. mpc

I got this old Conn hard rubber clarinet from the 20's, and with it came an old hard rubber piece that has the word "educator", a faded "woodwind co" trademark, and what LOOKS like G6? on the table. Also has a patent procession # on the side.

Its in really good shape, no fading of the rubber, no nicks or other issues. Blows real nice!

I've read a little bit about these being very nice blanks. Most things mention the G8 facing, but I'm sure the number on this one is a 6.....it might not be a G but looks one....

What's the story on these? I've searched the forums and found some dead links to old brochures, which would be nice to read !

Somewhere in the archives is a story about Benny Goodman liking the G7*. The poster found one of Benny Goodman's clarinets (in 'A') in a museum; it had a Woodwind Co. G7* with the 'steel ebonite' logo. He got to play the clarinet, said it sounded great, with Benny's trademark tone, but any reed harder than #2 didn't play well. Makes me curious what strength reed Benny used! I've got an 'Educator' Woodwind Co. on my bass clarinet, plays great, and does seem to like softer reeds.

Try 'Benny Goodman Mouthpiece' in Search. Poster's name was DanceDelight, or something like that.

Yeah I've noticed I can't get much of a sound when I use my regular Vandoren or Gonzalez #3 reeds on this piece. At first I thought there was something up with the clarinet or the reeds until I did some experimenting...it seems its quite an open mouthpiece! I'll have to try a softer reed and see what I think.

klook, if the modern reeds overlap the rails or are too long for the lay on the old mouthpiece, you could try Black Master or White Master reeds. I've had good results with those and they've saved me the trouble of whittling down the types of reeds I use on modern clarinets.

FWIW, when my old college clarinet professor retired, he went into the mouthpiece refacing business and preferred to work with Woodwind G8 Educator models. I have two of his customized works and they play just like my vintage Chicago Kaspar but require a slightly softer reed. Also, it has been reported that the late Hollywood clarinetist, Emily Bernstein, used a Woodwind G8 mouthpiece most of her career. One of her last projects was to record the clarinet solo, "Vicktors Theme" for the movie, TERMINAL, out a few years ago. Your Woodwind G6 is probably of similar quality with a slightly different facing than the G8. Bottom line: if it plays good, it is good. Hope this helps a bit.......

I just was given a link to an old brochure explaining the facings and different pieces for the WW company.

It looks like mine might be a C6, as I don't see G6 listed as an option.

It says that the C MPC's are "widely used by dance musicians who double on saxophone"

Why would that be?

I haven't had the chance to try the MPC with a softer reed, will do so today.

The absence of "hard rubber tarnish" on a mp this old indicates...to me...that it is not hard rubber but, rather a "bakelite" type material. These old WW mouthpieces were very popular and individual pieces can be quite acceptable. Sax players typically use a looser embouchure than clarinet players and an "open" tip with a softer reed is preferred by many. I am under the impression these older WW mps were made in Wisconsin by a Division of the Horton Co.....but am not positive.

Well.....I don't know about the hard rubber/plastic bit. I actually just happened upon an old Bettoney piece a few months back that was for sure rubber and it was not faded one bit.

But ....this piece I have, I haven't found the right reed/clarinet combo to really make it work. I think I'll have my friend Peter the refacer make sure its good, there's something about it I like but I'm still keen on my old, old, very faded Bettoney piece I've had for years......
