No, but there should be two of them... I heard there were two openings this year...

His name is Sam Boutris. He just finished his first year at the New England Conservatory with Michael Wayne. A very nice guy, and a great player.

He'll get there, but he has a way to go. Lots of people can play the Concertino or the end of Weber II fast. I'd like to hear him on the tricky stuff -- silky smooth in Daphnis & Chloe, Miraculous Mandarin. The Peter and the Wolf solo was a bit sloppy. And something requiring musicianship -- say, Dances of Galanta, or making the Rach. 2 solo hold together.

Not that you're ultimately wrong, but is it really necessary to pick apart the performance of a young college student showing off his technique? Wouldn't we expect someone that young to "have a ways to go?". Really, what's the point other than to prove you have high standards or a discerning ear?

Ken, some of the pieces mentioned are hard for the great masters. The first part of Daphnis is not to bad, but when it starts changing keys even the best players stumble. I've never had to perform Daphnis and I hope I never have to. I put so many hours of practice into it I have it memorized. It takes many hours of frustrating practice. I've played the other pieces such as Galanta, for me nothing is as hard to play as going over the break of Daphnis. I often wondered if someone could make a special clarinet just to get over that break!

I'm sure anyone surviving the auditions at Curtis has a great chance of being one of the elete players of the clarinet world.

Bob -

The Marchi system would be perfect for Daphnis. It extends the altissimo down to Ab (overblowing low E and low clarion B). See http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=322167&t=320159. If only it weren't so complex. If only it had caught on!

I mentioned Galanta because it requires more than technical perfection. In this (and in the Rachmaninoff), you need to capture the character of the music. I could just as easily have said the Mozart Concerto or the Brahms Sonatas.

Sam Boutris certainly has all the tools. I didn't (yet) hear the beautiful things he could make with them. I'll follow him with great interest.

When I play the Peter and the Wolf solo on Bb I make mistakes too. It's an A clarinet solo.

Congrat's to the young man!

The Peter and the Wolf solo is difficult on either A, in the original, or transposed on the Bb clarinet, I've always preferred the original. I didn't hear his U-tube performance but if you're going to play something and post it shouldn't it be perfect? Doesn't matter if you're 17 or 37, why put something on that does not show you in as best a light as possible. I can play that solo perfectly ten times in a row and I can screw it up a few times, I would only post it when I was proud of the way I played it. No doubt this kid is a really fine player, you don't beat out all the competition if you're not. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

The Peter and the Wolf solo comes about halfway through this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMhV8J-O2yE. It's simply tossed off, without mental preparation.

I still remember a very early Leonard Bernstein children's concert (in black and white, which shows my age) when Robert McGinnis got eaten alive by that nasty little thing.

I don't disagree with you in this respect. The younger generations relationship with media is significantly different than ours however.

In that video he is 17, sitting on top of a chest of drawers, and playing around with some of his friends with a video camera. The video of him playing with the Ft Worth Civic band was when he was a Junior or Senior in HS. There's a video of him playing with a West Texas orchestra of some sort as the winner of a contest. You will be hard pressed to find someone of his talent at that age.

I would imagine he will someday play with a major orchestra rather than some regional ensemble, and may have a distinguished solo career as well.

>> I'd like to hear him on the tricky stuff <<

This is something I never understood, people interested in hearing specific things from some musicians. If you want to hear something specific and there are others who play it, you can choose a recording or go to a concert to hear it. What someone chooses to play is part of them being a musician. It if fine if they or any other musician goes through life without playing anything that you or anyone else wants them to play.

Thank you all for the information, I am a big fan of the curtis school and montanaros teaching. I have to ask though, is it true he only has one ear? Does anyone know? Or where he is from? Who taught him before college?

Thanks!
Pete

Sam won the NEC Concerto competition - as a Freshman.
He's also going to be in the ICA Young Artist Competition.

Clarnibass-
If you are a professional musician, you can't go through life without playing what other people (conductors, presenters, etc.) want you to play. If you get to choose, you are very lucky indeed.

The lady that is now principal in Ft Worth Symphony taught him in HS, and maybe Andy Crisanti as well. He graduated HS in '09 I believe.

David, he got accepted into Curtis after one year at New England?

I just watched that viedo of him and I realize that I've met him! He was at Clarinet Day at the New England Conservatory last October. I remember him testing out barrels, and he did seem like a really nice guy.

You are correct. He took from Andrew Crisanti as well as Victoria Luperi in high school.

Im a BU alum living in boston at the moment, I have several clarinet friends over at NEC- I've ran into sam alot, he seems pretty nice- very solid player-does everything from memory, I saw some of his concerts around Boston, his concerto at NEC was a huge hit, Jordan Hall was packed- he did a small recital at BU last month, I was unable to go but I heard it was just great. He played Eb in the boston philharmonic this year and they did Mahler 9. Sounds like a little Tom Martin jr to me...I also remember going to a chamber music recital in Jordan hall where he and two other very talented NEC kids did the Bartok Contrasts, all three players were incredible, didnt drop a single note...

Although I am happy for sam to go to curtis I don't think I would've ever had the nerve to audition somewhere else once I was in a school like NEC, hopefully Michael Wayne was ok with his choice..

Best
-E

Makes me wish I continued to play music after college:-( Im sorry NEC is losing such a treasure, and for all those cute girls that pal around with him lol! Good Luck to mr sam!

Not all Curtis grads go anywhere, but a lot do. I'd put my money that he will make it.

I know samuel from his highschool days, he helped me alot when I was doing the allstate thing and when I was preparing for my college auditions... I never did like the crap he got on youtube from some people... But just to clear up some doubt regarding his peter and the wolf I uploaded this video that I have of him from last years OU symposium...

I also knew sam in highschool, he is VERY nice, he gave me his old R13, just gave it to me. I saw him do the WHOLE Mozart concerto with the fort worth symphony when he was in the 10th grade- I couldnt believe what I was seeing...perfect... He did a big weber concerto last year with the local youth orchestra at bass hall- nothing short of brilliant- has everything memorized! I saw where he lost his mother this year too, so sad, I met her once- great person, loved him very much. And for all of you who don't know, yes he is missing an ear and his father is also deceased... Sam is a great example of where great artists come from, and coming from his past I expect he will have great things to give the world as an artist.

David, sam is in the ICA finals?? Goo sam! I bet he wins...

Sincerely
AN

Yup - he just found out the other day.

Speaking of the OU symposium, my student Eddie Sundra just found out that he made the finals of their competition!

Sam is a great player, but don't you think this is all a little too much personal information to be putting up on an online blog about a college student?

You must be HIGH af, like on Pluto, The only way he could make it into Curtis in the first place is if he was already the best.

Sam Boutris is excellent player in the overall scheme of things in the clarinet player world. Even if he graduated from Curtis he will never be a true popular because he doesn't have a vibe to attract a wide audience like some musical greats. He lacks a wide repertoire and the vibe in his looks and personality to be a top star. His playing is excellent though.
