New York Phil New Year's Eve concert
Author: Curinfinwe

I just finished watching the New York Philharmonic New Year's concert. I only cought the last piece, though, which was An American in Paris. I'd never actually heard it in its entirety, and I really enjoyed it. Anyway, I was wondering who was playing second clarinet and bass clarinet? I looked on the orchestra's website's musician listing, and it says that the second clarinetist is male, but in the concert she was female. And there's no bass clarinetist listed, but there was definitely one playing. And very nicely too, I might add.
And, as a side question, where do the saxophonists come from? Does the orchestra employ them part-time for the rare occasion when they're needed, or something else?
Thanks!

That was Amy Rizotto, I think. A delightful concert, overall.

Yes, saxophonists are hired as needed. A couple of the players were Al Regni, who has played with them for a long time and Dan Goble.

Amy Zoloto maybe? (There's no "Amy Rizotto" in the union book)

Oh, yes, pardon me, it was Amy Zoloto, I remember now. And to my understanding, some orchestras have part-time saxophonists on their bill to engage whenever they're needed.

I thought the AIP was great but the cameramanlpersons should have focused on the sax players occasionally considering that Gershwin did. San Francisco Symphony is the only group that has educated its cameramen.

Unless one of the wind players is also the orchestra's saxophone player, usually a clarinet player, they are always hired on a "on the need basis". We often use some sax players for our pops concerts and once in a while, as with Gershwin or a classical composer, in our regular subscription concerts. We have a large pool of players they choose from depending on the players availability and the style of the music. Some are used for jazz some for classical and some do both well, it depends. None are listed in our personal players list since our former second clarinetist, who used to play sax well, retired. See my article in the newest clarinet journal or on my clarinet article page on my website about him. "Playing Second Clarinet in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra." ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

When they did the credits at the end of the concert, all the players were listed, including the sax section. The bass clarinetist was Amy Z(something); the list flew by quite quickly.

PBS just finished repeating the program and I was able to record the credits. The listed clarinetists are Mark Nuccio, Pascual Fortenza, Alucia Scalzo and Amy Zoloto, who also was the bass clarinetist.

The sax players were not listed.

Except for the 1st flute, the woodwind section juggled personnel between the first half and second half of the concert--probably to allow for personal New Year's Eve plans.

Mark Nuccio, was principal before intermission, Pascual Fortenza for the second half (no bass or eflat in those pieces).

Freelancers Amy Zoloto played bass in American in Paris, and Alucia Scalzo played second for the whole concert.

The NYPhil currently has only two permanent clarinetists--Nuccio and Pascual Fortenza.
