 Concertgebouw- new principal clarinetist
Author: Liquorice
Date:   2009-06-17 17:33

Today the Concertgebouw held the final auditions for the principal clarinet position. The job has been awarded to Andreas Sunden from Sweden. He's a fantastic musician and I'm sure will do a great job. Well done Andreas!

Hi, David. You can update the Fort Worth Symphony while you're making revisions. Crisanti retired and Ana Victoria Luperi took his spot.

And may I point out, slightly disgruntledly, that Symphony Nova Scotia is not on the list? We may be just a tiny Canadian province, but we do have a symphony... :)

I see that whole countries are missing.

It's been a really long time since I was able to update it - until recently actually.

Only the countries that paid me to include them are listed ;) (just email me and I'll add if you have the info - many are listed that way)

Oh, I was just joking. It'd be impossible to get a comprehensive list, probably.

Yeah, soon as you're done updating, next player retires and you have to go over it again. The bigger, the merrier...

btw - I played the Scotia Festival so certainly know Halifax. I'll include them of course.

I haven't publicised the list in many years as I couldn't update it for a long, long time (my webauthoring program died a while back and I kept getting blank pages when I tried to work with it).

Can someone clarify re: Fort Worth. Luperi is the principal clarinetist, right?
Crisanti was the principal flute.

In what way does she succeed Crisanti?

This is kind of old news anyways. I think this audition was like 4 years ago?

ww.player was simply asking David to update his list, i believe.
but what Crisanti had to do with Luperi is not clear.

Crisanti was the former principle clarinetist until he retired. Luperi replaced him as principle clarinet after he retired.

There is actually a video on youtube of Crisanti playing if anyone is interested.

Its too bad they didn't show more of his playing.

Andrew Crisanti was one of the top clarinet players in the world but has been semi-retired for a while. He was the principal in Fort Worth for at least 25 years. I don't recall seeing Luperi before two years ago. If exact dates really matter to anyone, I can make a phone call and find out for sure.

Diana Haskell, Eb**

She's not in Milwaukee anymore. Don't know who took her place.

Looked thru the whole list. my teacher (many years ago) is at Toronto, Raymond Luedeke.

ww.player,
Thanks. In looking quickly at the Fort Worth Web site I saw the name Jan Crisanti, as principal flute, and was thrown of the scent.
Apologies.

THIS is absolutely not true. Andreas Sunden is not a student of Yehuda Gilad. Andreas Sunden may have taken a lesson or two with Yehuda Gilad or been to a shorter course with Mr. Gilad but for once let's give credit to those with whom Mr. Sunden actually studied on a regular basis and who can be considered important and major influences on him. Andreas Sunden studied first in Sweden for many years with Hakan Rosengren and Lars-Gunnar Wahlstedt and then went on to study at the Oslo Conservatory.

And by the way. David, I understand there are two EQUAL Principal Clarinetists in the Concertgebouw Orchestra so your listing needs to be corrected ASAP.

Thanks.

Wo there, let's give David a break. He's only one guy trying his best to keep a general list of orchestral clarinetists. I never saw him mention that his list was 100%. But, while we are mentioning people left out, the Springfield (MA) Symphony was left out. The two clarinetists are Michael Sussman (principal) and Lynn Sussman.

Hi David,

Yes, I know. Thanks for maintaining this list. I did not mean anything badly and it certainly was not a criticism. Just thought of mentioning it. Sorry if I came out a bit abrupt.

Once again, thank you for keeping us with this wonderful list. Take care.

It wasn't my intention to take away from anyone of his other teachers and undoubtedly there are many influences on any successful clarinetist. I don't know his other teachers, as it doesn't list them in the bio I found online.
However, his bio does state that he studied at Oslo Conservatory AND lists studies with Deinzer in Italy and Gilad in L.A.. I would imagine if those teachers made it into his bio, they are important influences.

I am not sure which bio you have read but it cannot be the same that I have read....and Lars Gunnar Wahlstedt may be unknown to you (although he was solo clarinetist with the Swedish Royal Opera) but Hakan Rosengren is hardly unknown as a player but rather a prominent international soloist with many recordings and a substantial solo career. If you are a serious clarinetist you need to check him out and definitely get some of his recordings. I understand he is teaching somewhere in the US as well.

The other principal clarinetist in the Concertgebouw is Jacques Meertens.

Here's a link where Andreas mentions Gilad as one of his teachers:

David, thanks for your interesting list. Maybe you could start another thread to attempt to get the list fully updated?

Sorry, that link does not work but it does not matter. Bios in programs and websites etc. are often edited by administrators so one bio is not the other one alike unfortunately. And a bio is a promotional tool for something so it is usually tweaked differently dependent on where it is publicized.

So please let's not make statements like "chalk another one up for Yehuda Gilad" on this website (or any other website for that reason) based on an artist bio. A few lessons or a shorter course does not make a professional musician.

Let's try to be logical and sensible and avoid the promotion of this type of deceptions.

Sometimes a player will want to acknowledge a particular teacher for a particular insight or line of approach. But aside from that sort of unsolicited revelation, the linkage between teacher and student is much more tenuous than is naively assumed here.

Far closer to the truth is the idea that each player crafts his own approach, drawing on many sources.

A winner of the UK 'Young Musician of the Year' award a couple of decades ago was asked, on television, who his major influence had been, according to him.

"Well,....ME!" he replied. And though he blushes now to be reminded of it, I think it was probably the truth.

Thats true. When I look back and think who was my most important teacher I have no doubts that it was my harmony teacher, Isac Sadai.
What a musician.
I had very good clarinet teachers - but it was another clarinetist who
wasn't my teacher that had the greatest influence on my playing.

But- the problem here is different: there are too many clarinet players who
need to make their living as teachers (weather they admit it or not) and the competition between teachers is as agressive as between players.

Teachers need to put big names on their list of students to fill in the class
every year and a hot name such as Andeas Sunden, suddenly have many fathers.
If he didn't win no one would write- this guy who ALMOST won was my student :-)

Sarah

My name is Andreas Sundén and I just want to clear things out about my teachers. I have been having a lot of teachers during my time as a Clarinet Student but the last 7 years the only teacher I have been studying for is: YEHUDA GILAD.
I have him to thank for everything and specially before the Auditions for the Principal Clarinet in Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
For thoose who want a more specific CV just contact me instead of spreading rumours.
