Yo, ohsusan, hi there!
F res gurgles a lot for me too, but not all the time, so it's got something to do with how much hot wet air is being blown down there on any given day
...dunno if it's weather contributions to air humidity sometimes too ... no, it's not consistent with wet rainy days, it seems more consistent with low pressure moist warm fronts on their way in from the ocean
... maybe I shouldn't gulp my coffee (or other beverage) in rest bars?
... anyway, really must remember, must remember, to pre-warm my wood oboe by blowing down the pipe (before putting reed in) with all fingerholes and keys closed to low Bb, to establish a condensation line (yeah, spit line) all the way down the bell, so a river runs through it before playing a single note
... when I forget, about 80% of the time, condensation tends to collect in that special little hidey-hole provided by the F res on the right side of the pipe ... but only sometimes as already mentioned, so inconvenience is maybe only 30%
... once it's wet, it helps to blow it clear and then blot-dry the pad ... very thin and lint-free jersey cotton rag works OK, although cigarette papers are a recommended product for the blotting procedure, especially on the tiny octave holes
... have tried "left hand down a bit" rotation of oboe to slightly elevate the side with F res, but can't get my stiff sticky fingers working as well thataway
and not being bionic android billion dollar babe yet, key oil doesn't work for them
... haven't had any problem * touch wood *with gurgling octave holes
... for playing warmups I start at top pipe C and work down the pipe to the large holes first, and establish a good low C-B-Bb several times, before going up over the half hole and opening the now nicely warmed tiny octave holes for upper register
... as for the sticky semi-automatic keys *** love to hear *** how many other Yamaha players (or any other semi-automatic oboes) had to apply key oil every 6-8 weeks to keep that small semi-auto mechanism (on top front joint) moving smoothly? For some reason this particular mechanism on this particular oboe (brand new, only about a year old) seizes up quickly
... ah yes, maybe I'm over-using it? ... heh, heh, heh! back to *** manual octave exercises *** all these bells and whistles, eh? Still need some old-fashioned skills ...!
