The old philharmonic tuning ("Concert pitch") was almost a quarter-tone sharp (I have an old tuning fork somewhere) so you can be fairly certain he has an A=440 fork.

Modern instruments simply cannot get that sharp - clarinets, oboes, bassoons etc. Amateur flautists have no trouble, however, and often get extremely nostalgic in the higher registers, reverting to tuning standards of yore ..

Just checked my old tuning fork, marked "K. H. Pitch C" on one side, and "J Wallis and Son" on the reverse. Lights green on my tuner when I calibrate to 449. On 440 it shows about 45 cents sharp. However, it gets much more complicated. See here:
