I took piano lessons for seven years as a kid, starting at about age 6. My Mom would hold a book or magazing over my hands so I couldn't see the keys as I was playing. It was really an awkward feeling, but the idea was that I should learn the keys and play without watching my hands.....like typing on a computer keyboard.
Mom and Dad bought this old, antique, upright piano for about $10.00 from our church. The day it was delivered was one of the most memorable days of my life. Actually, the piano tuner said that it was a much better piano than the newer models. It had a better tone.
