I'm just curious to see what your opinions are on this subject.
When I was in school, those of us in the oboe section always had this "ego thing" that we played a difficult instrument. However, over the many years, I have come to this conclusion...the oboe is no more difficult to learn than any other instrument. I believe that each instrument has its own technical problems to master. But that doesn't mean it's any harder to learn than the other. I do feel ALL musical instruments are difficult to play well.
Several years ago, I learned to play the Highland bagpipe. Let me tell you, it has the most formidable technique I've ever encountered on a woodwind instrument. However, it wasn't daunting and quite do-able.
I would love for all of you to opine as I think there are alot of misconceptions about learning a musical instrument.
In closing, I'll relate an little story. My roommate played clarinet through junion high school. He asked his band director if could switch to oboe or bassoon. His director told him no. The oboe and bassoon are too difficult. Well, when he entered high school, he switched to bassoon. He ran into his old junior high school teacher and the teacher asked how HS band was going. Terry simply replied, "I'm first chair bassoon".
