I have recently discovered the phenomenal "Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano" by the late contemporary British composer, Madeleine Dring.
If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and beg, borrow, or steal [just kidding] it from your favorite CD source. The middle movement (Andante Semplice) is to die for!
The version I am listening to is by Joseph Robinson on a CD from the "New York Legends" series put out by Cala Records, Inc. (CACD0518). This is one of the CDs I brought home from my recent trip to Forrests in Berkeley.
Joseph Robinson is the recently-retired principle oboe of the New York Philharmonic. Flutist on the recording is Jeanne Baxstresser, with Pedja Muzijevic as pianist.
This CD is the single best I have found for listening to good new-ish oboe music. It's one of those rare CDs of which one can say, not only is the music itself outstanding (and outstandingly presented), but the CD as a whole somehow becomes more than the sum of its parts.
The CD also features the Poulenc "Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano", which on the whole I like as well as, or possibly even more than, the Dring. I've already ordered the sheet music for this one, since I work with an outstanding bassoonist. But now, I have got a driving need to find me a flute player who can do the Dring with me, as well.
Truly a gem! Let Santa know . . .
Susan
