There was a thread in the ABRSM forum today about all the old junk they have in school music departments, so maybe you could ask the music teachers in the local secondary schools if they have any instruments that they think are beyond repair. If you're very polite and leave your details, you may be pleasantly surprised.
You may be lucky in markets and car-boot sales (yard sales in USA?) but the sellers of most instruments I've seen there are convinced that their instrument is worth a lot, and don't like it when you politely point out that it's an old plastic student clarinet with only half the pads and worth almost zilch!
