 Re: Emergency Reed-finishing Question

Based on what I've read so far on this topic & my own experience, I suspect that there may be a gap somewhere in the spine of your reed. The spine must go from the bark just above the top thread thread wrap all the way to the bitter end of the tip (where the tip meets the air) with no breaks. Back lighting will show this. The spine in the tip permits the low notes to speak, per Tom Stacey at his Carmel Valley EH sessions. Another solution I would recommend is to clip the tip very slightly. This may get rid of the reedy sound. Also try scraping on either side of the tip spine to try & "put more wood" in the spine of the tip. If none of this works, then scrape a very small channel in the blend behind the tip, also a means of "putting more wood" on the reed. I watched John Mack do this several times to salvage a reed which was too over the top. After doing this you may need to clip the tip & scrape the very end of the tip to bring the reed back up to pitch. Of course, to do all this requires a knife up to snuff.

Good luck,

Best,

john
