I do hope someone with a better handle on this that I have will respond, but here's my .02.
I find that the ability to play softly depends first of all on the flexibility of the reed that I am using. There are some reeds on which I just can't play softly, period.
Second, if I am using an adequate reed, then it is a matter of making sure I am using the BREATH to produce the tone, and not trying to manipulate my embouchure to create dynamics. This involves keeping the embouchure relaxed and the air stream under diaphragm control.
