Oy.
I usually don't get too caught up in anything I read in one of those technique books. It usually ends up being more confusing.
Your eventual goal is to be able to have completely relaxed fingers, so that you can play freely, with finesse. The best way to feel this: grab a tennis ball (or one of those round stress-squeezer balls - that's what i have) and hold it with just your fingertips touching. Notice how all the muscles around the joints in the fingers are still fairly relaxed? Your thumb isn't locked out and gripping the oboe, and your ring finger isn't straight and locked out either.
This is the same grip you use on oboe! A nice relaxed "soft joints" grip.
