One nice thing about the thumbplate system for A/Bb and B/C is that you can continue to "half-hole" the 1st octave-key, rolling up to it as opposed to rolling down (for recorder). And the additional thickness makes your hand position that much more ergonomic.
The only time you take your thumb off the instrument is for those two notes, Bb and C (if you have a dual system you don't really need to do that). High C is a little precarious, though, especially when breathing in rapidly!
With some practice, and a well-adjusted octave key, you should still be able to rock up to the octave key, touching it with your thumbnail. It may be faster and cleaner than the "full lift".
