Hi,
I've played clarinet for about five years and recently found a great teacher who, like me, loves both classical and jazz clarinet.
I've tinkered with the oboe for a few years, taught myself about reeds, embouchure etc and absolutely love playing.
To my surprise, a few weeks ago I discovered that it may be possible to have lessons. We live in Italy, over an hour from the city and teachers are thin on the ground here.
However, the teacher is a professional oboist and I'm rather nervous about what he may expect. It would be incredibly difficult if I ever had to choose between the two instruments. I get a lot of pleasure from playing clarinet in a wind band, but also dream of playing oboe in our amateur orchestra. Oboists are very rare here!
Has anyone actually learnt these instruments at the same time? I don't worry about the embouchure, but once I start taking it seriously, I'm concerned that the concentration required for scales etc will cause confusion between the instruments. Up to now, the fingering hasn't worried me at all. But then I haven't exactly 'worked' at it!
If I can have lessons, I'll keep an open mind about it and see how it goes for a few months. But any advice, dos/don'ts would be very much appreciated!
Steve
