Yes - this device is called a Dial Indicator. You can buy the device from any reputable machine shop and build your own stand (the Ledet Reed Style's book has a picture/description of one kind) or you can buy one preassembled w/ stand from a double reed supplier. The stand has a thin platform (sort of like a plaque) that the reed pushes onto. The dial indicator gauge measures thickness of one side of a reed at a time.

A dial indicator is critical for gouging cane, but I've found one extremely helpful for improving the repeatability of reed making. You can compare thickness/thinness of existing "great" reeds, as well as troubleshoot things that don't show up visibly (backlit or not).
