I think in a way, it's almost like cooking - a chef doesn't need anyone to tell him why adding a certain ingredient will improve, or ruin his dish. He just knows. I think it's the same for reedmaking - once you know the basics of what is going on you are essentially free to experiment.
I think if there's one thing that has contributed to a lot of false information, or "folk physics" is the obsession with that damn dark sound. And we have all been guilty of loving it, no matter how we might claim we would never. I say that because, if we made reeds irrespective to what they sounded like, but based only on some measure of function, we would all probably make really great reeds from early on. The problem is that we are expected to sound good, smooth and soft, and sometimes that pressure can lead us to do things to the reeds. We might even believe what we are doing makes us sound better, when the reality can often be different.
