I have a mid-1980's Rigoutat (Classique or possibly a Symphonie) that was very bright from many years of heavy use. I had the opportunity to try out 3 bells (Evolution - no bell-ring & unlined socket) when Philippe was in town a couple of years ago.
The difference was extrordinary. I ended up with a bell that darkened up the tone significantly. It seemed to balance out the overtones throughout the range and gave the instrument a much richer tone, overall, without affecting its response. Although it did make the low-register much smoother and able to play delicate pp attacks.
If you have an instrument that is good and want to make it dazzle, i highly recomend trying out other bells.

BTW, I had switched to this oboe after I had my AK-bore Loree Royal stolen so it was a HUGE change and the new bell helped a lot to lessen the shock of the switch.
