I’ve been playing oboe for one year plus now using Edmund Nielsen blue thread reeds. They’re medium to hard in strength...depends on the batch. I am able to play on them without a lot of modification, scraping the tips, thinning the heart, etc. Just out of the box they’re pretty good. Recently, I noticed when playing on my teacher’s homemade reeds, they’re REALLY hard (i.e., take a lot of air to make vibrate) but sound so nice and rich. I am able to get a really nice sound too with them, though, they take tons of force (use your rock hard abs or else!) and I get fatigued pretty quick.
Would love to hear what experienced oboist think about my question:
Is now a good time for me to use hard reeds and practice long tones and get used to them?
Do you pros play on hard or resistant reeds and if so, when did you move up to them? Is it something I could make myself get used to now with a bit of practice or is something I should pick up later and be able to do easier? Not sure if it just happens to get easier for you or it takes deliberate practice to gain endurance.
Thanks in advance for the info.
