Today, while on holiday in London, I stopped by and tryed a couple of oboes at Howarth. Having heard really good reviews of Howarths oboes I decided to see if they were as good as a Royal. The good people there let me try 2 XL's (grenadilla), a buffet greenline and a Loree Royal. I felt the two Howarths were easily on par with the Loree Royal. The loree was more resistent then the Buffet and the 2 XL's but since i play on a Royal i was used to it. The Buffet had an awkward keywork and it lacked the depth of sound and tone I was looking for. After I tried the four oboes I was talking to the guy there and I asked about a cocobolo oboe and to my surprise he had and XL cocobolo in stock. I gave that a go and I absolutly loved it. Besides looking absolutly gorgeous, it was the perfect blend of a dark tone and a sweet tone, my vision of a 'solo' oboe. If i decide to pursue oboe performance in college i will definatly make the purchase of a Howarth XL cocobolo. In addition I would consider the XL in grenadilla if i ever decide to part with my Royal. I was very impressed with Howarth. An 'A' class maker.
