I once adored Miyamoto's oboe playing. I watched a performance of Mozart's C minor serenade with him leading the ensemble on 1st oboe on NHK and it was absolutely fabulous. But one comes to realise that he plays in a German scrape + Miyamoto fusion which is audibly and visually RESISTANT and this renders inflexibility. Thus the dark quality and full sound BUT a rather limited dynamic range and a vibrato which is...well....impossible without the crazy amount of effort. From the video the jaw is not exactly moving, but he is trying very very hard to fluctuate the note, thus a visual impression. (I assume this, although it reminds me of Craig's lecture, and maybe it is such that the jaw is involved, it's pop music anyways.) Legendary Hansjorg Schellenberger to me has the same 'problem'. One wonders, what a tone! But one listens to many of his recordings, and ... well....musically...there really isn't much interesting that he can say because his reed doesnt seem to allow him to! And in my opinion, this boils down to the characteristics of the reed itself. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for letting me rant. =)
