The problem with some ebonite instruments is that the bedplaces can be rough and grainy-looking when the cutter speed is too high, or the quality of the ebonite isn't great. I've used ebonite to bush toneholes with, and the finish can vary from bush to bush - some ebonite bushes will cut clean and some will be left grainy no matter what you do.

You can flatten them out smooth by topping them - that's using a short piece of brass rod the same diameter as the countersink with the face machined flat, and a piece of 800-1200 grit wet or dry glued on and trimmed. Hold this against the crown of the bedplace so it's making full contact all the way round and turn it applying light pressure so it levels out the crown, and leaves a blemish-free finish. Then using a spherical reamer, ream out the bedplace crown from the inside to make the crown thinner.
