Okay, that's very illuminating. Thanks for the input. You are now only the second person on Planet Earth to hear me play the oboe besides my husband (my children's opinion counts for nothing, of course), so I feel like I'm officially "out of the closet" now.
My attack seems abrupt, I suppose, because I actually do have trouble getting the reed to speak in the first place, now that you mention it. Even the Cassell reed seems to need it. So I guess I look around for a more responsive reed, a softer reed? The Cassell and Reedery reeds were billed as "medium soft". The Singing Dog reed was just sold as "student", and the Fox Artist was "medium", so I guess I'll order a Fox Artist medium soft.
Will work on oozing air into the reed meanwhile...I like that, "ooooooozing"...Hmm...
About the only option for teachers hereabouts is the oboe professor over at the college, who I assume must be good. Probably looking at that for next fall, as that's when they take on new "community" students.
Again, thanks for listening to me. It helps.
