50 reeds that meet that standard on a 1/3 yield basis working 5 hours assuming a five day work week = 150 reeds/1500 minutes or 1 reed every 10 minutes...that's an incredible rate of productivity for so many reeds especially if unlike Weber you're also gouging and tying! Even so, assuming you can clear $25 per reed net of materials and allocated fixed costs such as knives and other paraphernalia, you'd make $1,250 for 25 hours of work, or $50/hour...sounds like you'd have to do a bit better than that to compete with IT freelancing either by selling your less than highest standard reeds or charging significantly more for your best reeds (but who would pay and would you be able to clear that volume per week? corollary: what is the yield at the consumer level, i.e. effective price paid, on "professional" reeds from other makers?). I think these economics make sense in a world of underemployed oboists but all in all you have to consider handmade oboe reeds to be very attractively priced because of that and not a great business, but maybe I'm missing something.

Check out http://www.cascadeoboereeds.com/about.htm as an example. Professional reeds cost $24 and the owner has sold her reeds to some top of the line oboists...how can this be a great business? It would be interesting to know whether these professionals have to pay more than $24 to get the pick of the bunch or extra attention paid to their reeds or if, on the other hand, the advertising/connection value of selling reeds to these folks is worth more than the revenue per reed!
