What great suggestions everyone has offered!!!

If I may add my 2 cents - I think it is important to have a concept of what you want to sound like. There are so many variations of tone color, listen to recordings of the great players, find out what you like and try to emulate what you hear. As a singer, you probably have a pretty darn good ear - take advantage of it :-)

Reeds are also important - it helps to have a decent reed with good crow and reponse. It's kinda hard not to sound like a kazoo on a reed that has that barnyard sounding bassoon crow.
