I think it is great you are so motivated, Elkwoman! I wish more of my students were so excited. While I don't think you will be able to whip right through Gabriel's Oboe, you obviously love the piece, and I think the first phrases are right in the mid -range. After you have made a few squawks and figured out how to play the necessary notes, I bet you could just get through the first phrase or two. (am I right that you have played the clarinet or something before?) As long as you get some guidance reletively soon (as in lessons, or at least a coaching) you will be fine. Just don't try to play too high and try to keep your embouchure from biting.

I know of nothing so stimulating for a new player than to actually work on somthing they love that stretches them...so go for it!
