Interesting.
In retrospect, I believe I've oiled my oboe and ehorn several times a year, ...forever, but also I've always wiped down as much of the exterior as possible after oiling the bore.
In 8 years of playing a Loree (DZ...??) and 20 years on the same Covey and Loree ehorn, I so far do not have cracks on either. That includes moving from VA to FLA for 5 years then to CO for the last 14...
My Loree oboe never cracked either and I did the same break in with it. My previous student oboe, a Benwal (ever heard of those?) cracked while I was at the Army/Navy School of music after I'd had it 5 years when the AC went out and some idiot opened the windows... My oboe was soaked with condensation and the upper joint cracked from above the trill holes down through the b and a holes. ( Did I say idiot, perhaps a hole would be better.)
I also wonder about residue of evaporated oil changing the bore dimension.
I do see 'crud' happening on the exterior of the oboe and ehorn... the kind I can scrape off with a finger nail.
If this gunk is also on the inside, what would happen in time... not geological time, but say over 10 years?
As an adjunct, I will add, I faithfully followed Covey's advice per break in periods on my Loree oboe and Covey, ehorn was different and just did not get played as much. It hurt..., really hurt to play so little per day..., but I did it.
