I noticed a couple of things when I switched:
The AK seems bigger, and it feels like a more resistant oboe to me. The upper register has more ring in the tone and the intonation seems pretty bang-on to me. However this seemed really normal to me when I tried about 45 oboes for about two years before I bought the AK that I am playing now. All of the standard bore oboes seemed to lack a little something for me. While the intonation seemed good on the standard bores, there was something missing from the overall tone and I rejected a lot of oboes because of that. When I started trying out the AKs I noticed that I was over shooting my octaves and that there was so much tone-a big ringing sound that was lacking before.
The bells do affect things, but the tone-hole under cuttings are different on the AK than the standard bore. You can't-and I tried, make a standard bore sound like an AK by changing the bell.
I think the only standard bores that sound decent are the B and C series Lorees.
