Re: Sad oboe in second-hand shop

As unlikely as it may seem, I did spot a real Loree in a pawn shop and buy it for a very low price. The pawn shop owner did not even know what it was, never mind that is was one of the best brands. It was unplayable in the condition found, but I know enough about oboes to bring in my own reed and hold down a few offending leaky keys and decide it was easily fixable. Before buying though, I contacted five police departments in nearby counties to check if any were reported stolen, and also wrote the Loree company to confirm its serial number and authenticity. Stolen oboes often end up in pawn shops and I wanted no part of this...When it seemed that locating the former owner was impossible I bought it , paid a lot more to have it repaired and a deserving student of mine got a nice old Loree that she could otherwise not afford! Needless to say I look in that shop window every time I pass, but have never seen another oboe.
