Just wanted to throw my two cents in...
Just out of curiosity, what area of the world are you coming from? I'm curious as to whether the lip vibrato is more of a foreign/European practice...I'm from Canada, and in the American school as for as I have ever heard (and in any school for that matter) lip vibrato is a huge nono! I have experimented with various types of vibrato, and I think that Cari Ebli (principal English Horn of the TSO) put it the best in that you should do vibrato as if you're whistling. I personally think that's a great analogy. I think that if you keep a steady stream of air pushing from the diaphragm, you really should be able to do vibrato without the lips. Personally I have a vibrato somewhere between the chest and the lips...it is easily controllable and does not interfere with the airstream (and I can do it much faster than lip vibrato) The problem with lip vibrato is that it alters the tone hugely when you apply different pressures to the reed. I find that I have a very hard time controlling my pitch and keeping a good, solid supported tone when I try the lip vibrato. But hey, if it works for you...
