For fun, and for some informative reading, check out "Mozart in the Jungle" by former NY freelancer and NY Phil sub Blair Tindall. It's a bit expose-ish, and has some real cheesy parts, but it gives one person's point of view in regards to winning gigs and playing oboe for a living. Then read the Amazon.com reviews for other perspectives. Cheers!
