Re: How hard is it to get into Curtis

When I was at the Interlochen Arts Academy there was three of us which were above the rest. Selina G. went to Juilliard, and got her Master's there as well, studying with Douvas and Ferillo. She is now the principal of Tacoma Symphony and teaching at some universities over there. I'm not sure she considers it her "dream job" although it is close to her hometown.

Katie S. went to Eastman, and I heard she dropped out of the music world, unable to win any auditions. Currently she's in some lower-tier college in Texas still trying to get that "great" job.

I went to NEC, and became a decent oboist. I'm over here in Korea playing in the Seoul Symphony among other orchestras, and although it's a full-time gig, I wouldn't call it a "fantastic" job.

Moral of the story is I'd say all three of us had as good of a chance as anyone, if not more being that we got a jump start on conservatory life studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy with Dan Stolper and a great orchestra/wind ensemble to play in along with chamber groups (and endless hours to practice as high school students since we had nothing better to do out in the woods).

Meanwhile, you'll find a bunch of oboists who went to various universities and made it big. The Principal Bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra went to U. of Nebraska. Joe Robinson went to Princeton for an academic degree. Richard Killmer went to the University of North Colorado. It happened in the past, and is happening even more often now.
