<Will you discrimate a Chinese principal oboe of a major orchestra there?>
I may be naive, but I sincerely doubt that a person of Chinese (or other Asian) ethnic background would experience discrimination in any U.S. symphony.
In the first place, there are just so many people of Asian backgrounds in every walk of life the U.S. now -- business, medicine, music, science, politics. It is not just a matter of some folks in a "Chinatown" or something. Asian-Americans are prominent in virtually every U.S. community these days -- even in mine, which is very rural and a little bit of a throwback to the 1950s.
Second, without meaning to stereotype anyone, my perception is that Asian-Americans as a group place an enormous value on education and achievement, which has led to their success in a wide variety of pursuits and has gained them respect among those of us whose ancestors emigrated here earlier.
Just my $.02.
