Back in the 1950's, when I was first given an oboe to play, the band instructor, who was himself a clarinetist, insisted on having me start with the single-blade mouthpiece. I think he did not want to have to worry about the complications of an oboe reed. Private instruction with a noted NYC oboist was quickly obtained for me by wiser minds, and the mouthpiece was scornfully disgarded.
