My teacher learned two different extremes when she was a performance major. As an undergrad, her teacher advocated making reeds constantly so as to have a steady supply of decent ones to work with. Her studio even had reed-making parties. When my teacher did her graduate work and studied with Alan Vogel, he encouraged her to not rely on her reeds to do the work for her. Apparently he saves every reed he uses and labels them with the last date and performance for which he used them.
Basically I think that a reed a day is a little extreme, but a few a week is probably normal. Ultimately it depends on how you sound and what you want. A good reed can do wonders for your playing, but practicing on substandard reeds makes you work harder to achieve a good sound. Plus it's cheaper. I tend to go through about a reed or two a week, but I rotate among half a dozen or so, plus some older backups. I only practice about an hour a day though.
This board seems to have a lot of knowledgeable people. I would take their advice and use mine for your amusement. I am, after all, only a student.
