I got to look firsthand at a variety of instruments last week. Among us, there were my Covey Classic (grenadilla), a rosewood Laubin, a rosewood Patricola, a new Buffet Greenline, and two Lorees (don't know what models), as well as a Loree EH and a Fox EH (which its player loves).
I got to try the Greenline and the Laubin. I agree with the Laubin player, that the keywork on her instrument was difficult to use. It seemed "scrunchy" -- had to cramp the fingers to play it. Not at all like the Covey or Loree (which feel quite similar to each other).
The Greenline won the prize for well-designed keywork. The fingers just fell where they were supposed to, with minimal effort. I didn't get to try the Patricola. I do know that it was the second version of this instrument that the player had owned, in two years time -- the first having cracked and fallen to pieces in a short time. (Hey, it happens.)
Interesting that there were no Yamaha or Fox oboes represented in the group. I don't think that mirrors real life.
All in all, I again came away with the ultimate regard for the mechanics and SOUND of my Covey -- rich, with spot-on intonation. It is just a superior instrument. So, there's my vote: Covey Classic.
