Wow, thanks for all the responses and useful suggestions. I was a bit nervous about posting but it's worked out great. [grin]
A little more info about me...
I've always like double-reed music, as mentioned, and my wife knows that. For Xmas this year she gave my a Julie Ann Giacobassi CD called "English Horn and Oboe d'Amore" as a stocking stuffer. Well, I played it to death. I think she was probably about ready to bury it in the back yard! So for my birthday a couple weeks ago, she drops a package in my lap. It was a certificate for 5 oboe lessons from a local teacher and a rental Fox 330. So this has all sort of "blown up" in the last couple weeks.

Duchy, great idea on the keyboard and children's books. I donated my keyboard to a local school but I'll hit a music store today and get some appropriate books and a simple keyboard. I'll tell them "It's for my 6 year-old niece, what do you recommend?" LOL! However, I doubt it will be "second nature" to me when I'm done, hasn't happened yet. But I know I'll get better, at least.

Steve, I hoping that you're right and I've finally "come home" after playing the wrong instruments for me. The teacher specified the oboe model to rent and gave my wife 3 reeds of her own making to start me off. She says she hates "student" instruments and "student" reeds, the student has enough to worry about without fighting inadequate equipment. Makes sense!

I'll address the comments by Susan and vboboe in separate posts.

My two goals at this point are:
1. The play a simple tune all the way through with reading ease and technical fluency, to the point where it can be *music making* and not mere mechanical activity.
2. To someday play along with one of those "Music Minus 1" CDs, again, as part of *music making*, with the technical issues of producing the music as secondary as possible.

Thanks again for the help and the encouraging welcome!
