It is certainly accepted to have a lot push and pull in the tempo of these pieces. Don't shy away from tastefully taking time or pressing forward! However, also pay attention ot time signatures and metronome markings. When he writes in a time signature, he is probably intending for there to be a stricter meter, whereas where it's not written as much in a certain meter it's probably intended to be more free. As well, I know that he revised the work and put in metronome markings after he found that performers were taking a few too many liberties with the tempi or the general feel of the movements, so you should certainly take those into consideration as well.
