 Re: How long...

... yes i found relearning american scrape took me more than an hour for the first few reeds, then for a long stretch it took about an hour. It's gotten more familiar and easier as i went along, although it usually takes me 30-40 minutes even now (i'm really cautious, cane costs money!)

If you can commit to an intensive schedule of one reed per day for at least two weeks (3-4 weeks better) it'll get much easier & quicker, just handling the * sharp enough * knife more expertly without grinding edge off along the metal tongue, that makes a big difference in time.

Goal is maybe 20 minutes a reed, depends how quickly you pick it up or how intensive you get into it.

... crow's supposed to turn up when you blow at thread line after clipping the tip back to 70mm, after doing everything else, but only if the tip is really responsive (resistant tip makes it hard to blow just right to find the crow), so make sure tip is really good first, doesn't just peep, blows freely.

I find i'm timid taking enough wood out along lower back to under the catch, so when there's just enough out the crow shows up before clipping, and then clipping improves it to a really good squawk. I'm timid because there's this huge reed advisory, can take wood off, can't put it back on.
Better to proceed slowly, balancing one shaving in all 4 sections at a time, until you just know how much should come off from experience, so take an hour if necessary.

Too much general woodiness anywhere in reed (that is, generally too stiff for you) hides the crow too

... and yes, reed-making is really labor intensive time-wise, so schedule it when you don't have any concerts or exams coming up, or it'll compete with practice time, best to make reeds when you don't need any (have enough good ones already!) so you're relaxed about the whole process

... wishing you the best succees and the best reeds you ever played :-)
